The Integration of Scales in Landscape Ecology

چکیده

Inquiries into the issue of scale become increasingly important in the field of landscape ecology and natural resource modelling and analysis. Scales of observation and modelling are often pre-set based on the a priori description of the system of study. In this paper we focus on upscaling approaches. We emphasize that predictability depends on the relation between the spatial and the temporal scale of study. Three examples of scale dependent processes illustrate the importance of identifying the scale at which processes operate to avoid erroneous conclusions. Two modelling studies show a number of scale related bottlenecks in data, interpolation, extrapolation and modelling. In statistical modelling of spatial data spatial dependence should be examined, truly independent validation data sets should be available and spatial extrapolation should be done with care. In mechanistic modelling of processes spatial up-scaling requires information on landscape heterogeneity and how this influences the modelled processes. Although a general guideline in choosing an appropriate scale of study is that discrepancies between the scale of observation, dominant processes and model calculations should be avoided, in most landscape ecological studies such discrepancies are a given. They should be explicitly acknowledged and the information in this paper may help in recognizing them and dealing with them.

Using the Component Model of Sustainable Landscape for the Quality Assessment of Urban Natural Public Spaces: A Case Study from Tehran’s River-valleys

Ecological destruction in human-dominated landscapes has significant impacts on environment sustainability internationally. Landscape planning can play a role in mitigating the effects of human-related activities. One element of landscape planning involves the analysis of the biological, spatial and social arrangement of areas in an urban environment and identifying characteristics that are und...

LANDSCAPE ECOLOGY: What Is the State of the Science?

■ Abstract Landscape ecology focuses on the reciprocal interactions between spatial pattern and ecological processes, and it is well integrated with ecology. The field has grown rapidly over the past 15 years. The persistent influence of land-use history and natural disturbance on contemporary ecosystems has become apparent. Development of pattern metrics has largely stabilized, and they are wi...

Linguistic Audit as a Professional Activity

The subject of this research is linguistic (or: language) audit. The term is new and not being widely used so far. Linguistic audit, in particular, is offered as a service of linguistic-consulting agencies’ activities. Modern linguistic consulting, according to the author, is a form of stimulating theoretical and practical development of linguistic ecology, a new branch of applied linguistics, ...

Landscape Ecology in North America: Past, Present, and Future

Landscape ecology offers a spatially explicit perspective on the relationships between ecological patterns and processes that can be applied across a range of scales. Concepts derived from landscape ecology now permeate ecological research across most levels of ecological organization and many scales. Landscape ecology developed rapidly after ideas that originated in Europe were introduced to s...
